Hacks ruined ladder for me
« on: June 15, 2012, 02:11:40 PM »
So I find it pointless to ladder anymore. Ever since I heard about this wave of hacks, I've been reluctant to play ladder. I finally decided to give it a shot, and my placement match was against someone who accused me of hacking, but in reality, was hacking himself. Anyone else feel like not playing anymore because of this? I don't ever see this being fixed either....

To paraphrase Day[9] in, I think, his #200 daily: playing against map hackers1 will make you better at the game.  Since you'll only be able to win with straight up macro builds that are safe against various no-scout cheeses, you will hone your micro/macro skills and raise your overall skill level.

Think of it like training in 400x gravity ala Goku in Dragon Ball Z.

Still it sucks.

1Obviously the same doesn't hold true for blink/burrow hackers, as they will win any straight up fight.

I don't think that many people hack lower than Master level...I only say that because I think if you're hacking even as a gold player you should be able to make Masters.. Worrying about hackers seems like a moot point to me as there isn't much I can do about it..eventually they'll be dealt with. Also most maphackers just do stupid shit like blind proxy 2 gate/rax/6 pool so the games will end quick.

Also what Monad said.

I've never run into a hacker. But I have run into someone I thought was hacking.

I send out an early drop in a weird pattern over his third to his main. Marines take it out enroute.
I go to build a supply depot by my 2nd's rocks. Taken out asap.
Try again, destroyed before it can finish.
More and more dumb shit like that.

I was getting so fucking flustered. Everything I was doing was getting wrecked for the longest time.

Turned out it was dumb luck.
He was taking his third instead of 2nd when my drop got nailed and happened to be pushing while I was trying to build stuff. Fucking plats.

@Kibbles,  so true.  I remember back in the CS days everytime some one shot me, my gut reaction would be H4CKx0r!

Difference is, now we have replays. I had no idea this guy was hacking until I looked over the replay to see where I went wrong.

The scans, the camera lock, and the zooming, are all clear indicators of a Terran map hacking. If you know what to look for it's rather easy to tell. He's also magically gone from bronze to top diamond in a few seasons? His 4v4 has ALWAYS been bronze/silver, and now hes magically diamond? Suspicious.

See for yourself. http://drop.sc/198999

Scouting - His first scouting is done by way points while not looking into the FOW, assuming he uses the minimap to scout. At 4:28 he changes this pattern by actually moving into the FOW to give his units an order NOT from the minimap. This is big indication that screen lock has been activated/deactivated, but not evidence on it's own.

6:24 - Scan. He waited like 3 seconds after selecting his command center(staying over top of it) to scan. A clear indicator of maphacking, is when the scan goes off, then IMMEDIATELY, their camera goes there. This is because the fog of war won't show camera movements. When the area becomes revealed, the camera jumps there because he's looking there, and there is no more fog of war. You could also assume this is part of his plan to throw me off, by scanning my ebay, and claiming I'm hacking and knows he's going cloaked banshee. Which, any decent player beating a diamond would know that if hes opening FE he couldn't possibly have cloak by now, let alone banshees.

6:30-6:32 - Watch here, as you can see his camera zooms in a touch. This is a side effect of a bad hacker. One of the hot keys for a popular hack is the middle mouse button (don't know which one, but look it up if you want). Idiots will go to hit the middle mouse button and accidentally scroll. The hacker that was caught and was going to MLG but backed out, did this, but stayed zoomed in for a whole 3 minutes. Fail.

9:00 - Another mysterious scan. See point above. Was camera locked over time of his CC that wasn't even an orbital.

11:15 - Another mysterious scan to see my army is out. No Terran spends mules every 2 minutes to just check on my army location. I took the watch tower, OBVIOUSLY my army won't be there. I'll either be attacking or taking a third base.

11:47 (and various other times) - Every time he goes into the FOW, to check what I'm doing, his camera locks here, in between his main and nat. Why here? If he double taps his hot keys, they'd go to his CC's, his production, or his army. Not some random place over his depots. There is a barracks there, but if you double tap his hot keys in the replay, it focuses on a different barracks. Yes this has been tested.

12:57 - Here he magically is able to go into the fog of war again, to scan. Since he killed off my army, it's easy to assume the camera lock isn't enabled at this point.

13:20 - He magically knew I hadn't taken a third base in the normal third location? Almost every person would send a marine up there to make sure there wasn't some kind of flank. Unfortunately this is circumstantial and on its own wouldn't hold anything. With the earlier evidence it's peculiar.
